Roman Wroxeter

Wroxeter today is just a small village; the parish of Wroxeter and Uppington had a population of only 382 in 2011. But the Roman city that stood on the same site is believed to have been the fourth largest settlement in Roman Britain, with an estimated 15,000 inhabitants.

The Roman city had the daunting name of Viroconium Cornoviorum. It owed its importance to its strategic location on the banks of the River Severn, whose valley stretches far into Wales.
